Eliyahu was born in Ramat Gan, Israel. He grew up in the youth system of Ironi Ramat Gan and played for Israel's Under-20 national team. He moved to Hapoel Galil Elion and played there for three seasons.
Eliyahu won a silver medal with Israel's Under-20 national team in the 2004 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. He was the 2005 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship's top scorer where he was elected All-Tournament Team.
Eliyahu entered the 2006 NBA Draft and was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 44th pick. He was later traded to the Houston Rockets. In 2012 the draft rights of Eliyahu were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In 2006 Eliyahu signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv and won his first Israeli Super League championship. In December 2008 he became the first Israeli player to be awarded with the Euroleague player of the Month prize.
In 2009 Eliyahu signed with Caja Laboral of the Spanish League and won the Spanish national championship. Eliyahu scored 18 points in the deciding game against Euroleague champions Barcelona.
In September 2010 Eliyahu returned to Maccabi Tel aviv. In 2012 he was named Israeli Super League MVP.
Eliyahu competed with the Israeli national team in four EuroBasket championships (2007-2013). He was the team's leading scorer in three consecutive tournaments (2009-2013) and is the Israeli national team's 7th all-time leading scorer.
In 2013 Eliayahu signed a three-year contract with Hapoel Jerusalem.
