Smith was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He played college basketball for Southeastern Illinois Community College for two years. He is the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,433 points. In 2004 Smith was named NJCAA All-American First Team. He was also named conference, district and regional Player of the Year. Smith committed to play for Rick Pitino at the University of Louisville, but then decided to enter the 2004 NBA Draft.

Donta was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 35th pick. He played 61 games for the Hawks in two years, averaging 2.7 points in 9.2 minutes per game. In between, he was assigned to the Arkansas RimRockers of the NBA Development League.

In 2007 Smith signed with Academic Sofia and won the Bulgarian League Championship. He also won championships in Australia, Venezuela and Porto Rico. He also played in China and Mexico.

In 2012 Smith signed with Maccabi Haifa. In his first season with the team, Haifa qualified for the Israeli League Final and won its first ever championship beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 86-79. In 2013/2014 Haifa reached the finals once again, but lost the championship in a two-game series against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Smith was named league MVP.

In 2014 Donta signed a three-year contract with Hapoel Jerusalem

On his first season in the capital, Smith hel[ed the team to win the championship, while he was posting great numbers of 11.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists.
